POTA court rejects 'Nakheeran' Gopal's bail plea
Monday, August 4 2003 20:49 Hrs (IST)
Chennai: A designated POTA (Prevention of Terrorism Act) court on August 4 denied bail to R R Gopal,
editor of Tamil bi-weekly "Nakheeran", who was booked under the anti-terrorist law on April 16 2002.
Designated judge L Rajendran dismissed the journalist's application after the crime branch-CID of the
Tamil Nadu police opposed the plea for bail.
Gopal, who was taken into custody on the night of April 11 for questioning in connection with another
case against him, was initially charged under the IPC for sedition after a pamphlet belonging to a
banned organisation and a revolver were allegedly recovered from his possession.
POTA was invoked against him five days later.
On June 16, the Supreme Court had restrained the prosecution from filing the charge-sheet against
Gopal.
