NHRC chief mum on BJP's criticism on Best Bakery
Monday, August 4 2003 16:16 Hrs (IST)
Bangalore: National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) chairman Justice A S Anand on August 4
declined to comment on Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) criticising the NHRC moving the Supreme Court
seeking a fresh trial in the Best Bakery and four other Godhra carnage-related cases.
"No comments," said Justice Anand when asked by reporters about BJP's statement describing the
NHRC move as wrong and unprecedented and it would be dangerous for the country's federal structure.
He also refused to join issue over criticism that the NHRC, which sought fresh investigation in those five
cases, is not equally concerned about the Marad incident in Kerala, which claimed eight lives.
Justice Anand earlier inaugurated a five-day training programme for university teachers in Human Rights
education, jointly organised by the Bangalore University and South India Cell for Human Rights
Education and Monitoring.
