Tuesday, August 5 2003 16:52 Hrs (IST)

Jakarta: A bomb explosion has killed at least 10 people and injured over 74 people at the luxury Marriott Hotel in the Indonesian capital Jakarta.

"The victims that have been recorded are 10 dead and 74 others injured," national police chief general Da'i Bachtiar told a press conference in Jakarta.

Five floors of the American-run hotel have been damaged, as also the cars that were parked outside.

"It was clearly an act of terrorism", said Indonesian Defence Minister Matori Abdul Jalil.

The Governor of Jakarta, Sutiyoso, said the explosion was "very likely" to have been carried out by a suicide bomber.

There were conflicting reports of the nationalities of the dead.
