Quake rattles Gujarat; an aftershock of 2001

Ahmedabad: An earthquake measuring 4.9 on the Richter scale on August 5 jolted several parts of
Gujarat, including Kutch, which was the worst hit by the calamity over two years ago and Ahmedabad,
triggering panic among the people, but there were no immediate reports of loss of life or property.
The quake rattled buildings, some of which swayed briefly, in several areas, including Gandhinagar,
Saurashtra and North Gujarat, prompting panic-stricken people, with memories of devastating
earthquake of 2001 still fresh in their minds, to scurry out of their houses.
The meteorological department sources in Ahmedabad said the intensity of the tremor was 4.9 on the
Richter scale and the epicentre was "somewhere near Bhuj".
They described the quake as "an aftershock of the 2001 earthquake that had rocked Gujarat".
Media offices were flooded with frantic phone calls, with people anxiously awaiting further details on the
tremor.
Officials of the districts in Saurashtra region said the people there did experience the quake, but there
was no immediate reports of any casualty.
