Surat: The builder of the three-storey building, which collapsed in the city on August 3 killing 43 people,
will be produced on August 6 in the court of the Chief Judicial Magistrate for police remand even as the
Municipal authorities initiated a crackdown on hazardous units in residential areas.
Jerambhai Radaria, who surrendered to police on August 5 night, was later arrested and a case
registered against him under various sections of Indian Penal Code (IPC), police sources said.
On August 5, the Municipal authorities demolished 25 unauthorised shops in the Mahadev Nagar and
Swaminarayan areas.
Three buildings, found to be structurally weak, were also pulled down.
Chief Minister Narendra Modi, who visited the building collapse site on August 4, had ordered authorities
to conduct survey of hazardous units.
Police suspect that heating up of a furnace in the diamond unit on the ground floor of the three-storey
building might have triggered the explosion, flattening three buildings in the Varachha area.
