SENSEX recover initial losses at morning session
Wednesday, August 6 2003 13:13 Hrs (IST)

Mumbai: After resuming on a weak note, the SENSEX recouped sharply and even moved above August 5's closing level at opening session on the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) on August 6 on fresh buying support from operators.

Attributing the initial setback to steep decline on wall street on August 5 night where the Dow Jones industrial average and the tech-heavy NASDAQ composite index dipped by 149.72 points and 40.56 points respectively, dealers said operators grabbed the opportunity and made selective purchases.

The BSE-30 share Sensitive Index opened lower at 3754.65 as against August 5's close of 3765.82 and dropped further to a low of 3740.65. Later it recovered smartly to touch a high of 3783.08 before being quoted at 3774.62 at 10.30 hors (IST).

Index-based shares like Bajaj Auto, Dr Reddy, HDFC, Hero Honda, HPCL, ITC, Nestle, Ranbaxy and RIL attracted good buying support at lower levels.

Under the leadership of software bellwether, Infosys Tech, IT shares suffered sharp to moderate setback on heavy offloading by local as well as foreign funds following weak NASDAQ advices.

Cement shares drifted further downwards on sustained selling by local institutions.
