India condemns terror attack in Jakarta hotel
Thursday, August 7 2003 19:46 Hrs (IST)

New Delhi: Strongly condemning the terrorist attack in a Jakarta hotel, India on August 7 asked the international community to intensify co-operation to effectively combat the menace of terrorism.

"More needs to be done to isolate external forces and groups that continue to provide sustenance to terrorism and to dismantle the infrastructure that nourishes it," an External Affairs Ministry spokesman said in a statement.

At least 10 people were killed and 74 others injured after an explosion tore through the luxury JW Marriott Hotel and surrounding buildings in Jakarta's main business district on August 5.

"India believes that such brutal and senseless act of violence cannot be justified on any grounds whatsoever," the spokesman said.

"Government of India strongly condemns the terrorist attack" in Jakarta, he said emphasising, "Today, when the menace of terrorism confronts nations across the world, there is need for the international community to strengthen and intensify co-operation to effectively combat and eradicate this menace."

The spokesman said India was committed to work with its partners in Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) and with the international community towards this objective.
