Pak for EU facilitation to help resume dialogue
Thursday, August 7 2003 17:51 Hrs (IST)

Islamabad: Pakistan is likely to suggest dates to India for official level talks shortly and has urged the European Union (EU) to play a "facilitatory" role to persuade New Delhi to have Foreign Secretary level parleys.

"Pakistan has made another request to the international community to play its facilitation role in persuading India to for an early resumption of foreign secretaries talks," a diplomat of the European Union, who did not want to be identified, was quoted as saying by 'The News' on August 7.

"Pakistan may suggest, shortly, two or three dates to India for a round of Indo-Pakistan Foreign Secretaries' dialogue, which diplomats expect to be resumed after the UN General Assembly session," the daily reported.

The diplomat said Islamabad had also conveyed to the international community that there was no training camp for terrorists on its soil and no terrorist is crossing the Line of Control (LoC).

"I speak to Foreign Ministers of India and Pakistan often and I get positive indicators during our telephonic conversations that things are moving in the right direction," EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana told the daily.

Expressing his optimism about the success of the peace process in South Asia, Solana hoped that official level dialogue between India and Pakistan would start soon.

Pakistan agrees to the Indian idea of a step-by-step approach to normalise ties, suggesting that first step towards resuming official dialogue could be Foreign Secretary level talks.
