Guj bandh to protest hike in power tariff begins
Friday, August 8 2003 11:39 Hrs (IST)
Ahmedabad: Sporadic incidents of rail-roko (train stoppage) and stone-pelting on state transport buses
were reported on August 8 during the Opposition Congress-sponsored Gujarat bandh to protest the
steep hike in electricity tariff for the farm sector and school and college fees.
A mob tried to stop the Mumbai-bound Gujarat express at Maninagar railway station. Several persons
were taken into preventive custody, police said.
State transport buses were stoned by miscreants at some places in the city, police said.
In a bid to make the bandh a success, Congress has threatened to stop the transportation of milk and
essential commodities from the villages to cities.
Several farmers and students organisations have declared support to the bandh.
Gujarat BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) has also announced a parallel programme to protest the NHRC's
(National Human Rights Commission) petition to the Supreme Court in the Best Bakery case.
The party has organised a dharna (sit-in) and decided to observe the day as Nyay-Palika sanman divas.
On the eve of the bandh on August 7, miscreants attempted to torch several state transport buses in
Vadodara causing tension in many areas.
