Girl's kidnapping sets off violence in Patna
Friday, August 8 2003 13:41 Hrs (IST)
Patna: Violence erupted in the city following the kidnapping of a seven-year-old girl Sweta Kumari,
daughter of a prominent decorator, by unidentified miscreants from East Patel Nagar locality in the state
capital on August 8, police said.
The agitators burnt tyres at different points on Bailey road and broke windscreens of around half-a-
dozen vehicles to protest kidnapping of the girl, which comes barely 15 days after the abduction of
Siddhant Parmar, the eight-year-old son of a SBI bank officer and nephew of Sugarcane Minister
Raghvendra Pratap Singh.
The situation was brought under control after the police, led by city superintendent of police O N
Bhaskar, reached the spot and chased away the mob after a mild lathi-charge. There was however, no
report of any casualty.
Police said that road blockade on Bailey road has since been lifted.
Additional police forces have been deployed in the area to maintain normalcy, the police said.
Police said Sweta, daughter of Santosh Kumar, was taken hostage at gun point when she was waiting
for her school rickshaw outside her residence in East Patel Nagar under Shastrinagar police station on
August 8 morning.
Siddhant, who still remains traceless, was also on his way to school when he was kidnapped from near
Jagdeo Path under the same police station on July 24.
