'Midnight actions are common in AIADMK regime'

Chennai: Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) president M Karunanidhi on August 10 declined to
comment on the possible reasons behind the sudden demolition of Seerani Arangam stage, a famous
public meeting venue on the sands of the Marina, but said such midnight actions were
nothing "uncommon" in the present All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) regime.
"Anything can happen in this regime. When a government functions in an unjust manner, such activities
are common," he told reporters, reacting to the demolition of the stage, built in the 1970s during the
DMK regime.
The state Public Works Department (PWD) had pulled down the stage, claiming that it was dilapidated
and was unsafe for use.
Asked whether the structure had been demolished because it was built by the then DMK government or
since Christian organisations had held several meetings there in the recent past, he declined to
comment.
"I don't want to talk about justice or injustice so long as the present regime exists," he said to a
question.
On the reported renaming of the venue by the previous DMK government, he said only the stage was
named "Seerani Arangam" and not the entire area.
Asked whether he would term the demolition of the stage as an act against Tamil culture, as he had
described the removal of the Kannagi statue in the vicinity of the Seerani Arangam last year, he said the
two issues were different.
