Pak to recognise Israel soon: Intelligence report
Monday, August 11 2003 17:09 Hrs (IST)
Islamabad: Intelligence data collected by Jane's Intelligence Digest (JID) suggests that Pakistan may
soon give its recognition to Israel.
"Pakistani authorities, particularly the military leadership close to the President, have already taken the
decision to establish direct links with Israel," 'The Nation' quoting from the JID report said.
According to the paper, intelligence officials in the West have reached this conclusion after undertaking
several visits to Israel and Pakistan, adding that "the decision of recognizing Israel will have a significant
impact on the General Pervez Musharaf's attempts to stabilize Pakistan, as well as his own
political future."
The JID report claims that, "Musharraf seems determined to push forward with his agenda in the near
future," despite facing opposition.
The JID has enumerated five elements that have changed Pakistan's perception vis-à-vis Israel. They
are (1) Islamabad's concern over growing defence ties between Israel and India, (2) Desire by the
Pakistan defence establishment to procure arms from Israel, (3) That recognition might prevent Israeli
and Indian lobbies in the United States from joining forces with each other, (4) That such a move will
soften U S Congressional opinion over the Bush administration's promise of three billion dollars in aid to
Pakistan spread over the next five years and (5) U S pressure on
Musharraf to recognize Israel quickly.
"Because of these elements, there is an increasing view within Pakistan's ruling circles that the
establishment of diplomatic ties with Israel will be vital to the country's future interests," the report says.
According to the report, by normalizing ties with Pakistan, the only Muslim country with nuclear
capability, Israel will achieve an important strategic goal and also be in a position to tone down hard line
Opposition rhetoric.
"Before announcing Islamabad's recognition, Musharraf is keen on testing the likely reaction, both at
home and abroad. It is essential for his political survival that the level of risk involved be rewarded by
Washington and Israel and Pakistan's standing in the Muslim world is not damaged," the report
concludes.
