BJP misleading youth, spreading hatred: Sonia Gandhi
Monday, August 11 2003 23:14 Hrs (IST)
New Delhi: Congress president Sonia Gandhi on August 11 lashed out at Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)
for attempting to "mislead" younger generation in a "pre-planned" way and "spread hatred" and
communalise India's educational curricula.
"Today, BJP and its sister organisations are attempting to misguide younger generation in a pre-
planned way. They are spreading hatred through communalism and casteism. They are even attempting
to spread the virus in the educational system", Gandhi said while addressing a Conference of
National Students Union of India (NSUI), frontal wing of the party.
Gandhi said textbooks in schools and colleges were being changed, history books were
being "distorted" and "mud-slinging" was on against great freedom fighters while those who have no
contribution to the independence were being glorified.
"They would have succeeded in their attempt had the Congress government in states not adopted a
firm stand against it", she said and asked the NSUI leadership to be alert and sacrifice everything to fulfil
the cherished dreams of freedom fighters.
Stating that history has been witness to the fact that youth had been the harbingers of every revolution
and change because of their "fresh mind and idealism, their commitment to social justice and fight
against injustices", Gandhi said it was this very reason BJP and its sister organisations have
intensified their attempt to mislead youth in the last few years
