'Talks have to precede Marad rehabilitation'
Tuesday, August 12 2003 15:20 Hrs (IST)

Kozhikode: The district administration has recommended to a state Cabinet sub committee that top-level discussions with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) state leaders would help in effectively restarting the process of rehabilitation of the victims of Marad violence of May 2 in the beach area.

"I have submitted a set of proposals to the sub-committee and primarily recommended that holding high- level talks with the RSS, VHP and BJP leaders is necessary before taking a decision on rehabilitation", District Collector, T O Sooraj said.

The sub-committee headed by Public Works Department (PWD) minister Dr M K Muneer, constituted to rehabilitate the affected families of the violence, is reportedly holding hectic deliberations with various political parties on the issue.

Stating that conditions were more favourable now to again commence rehabilitation at Marad, where nine persons, including eight belonging to the majority community, were killed in violence on May 2, Sooraj said the process would start at Chulliyanvalappu near the affected area with about 45 families of minority community expected to be brought back to their homes.

"Once we succeed in carrying out this process peacefully, there can be a natural flow of the other deserted families", he said.

Sooraj said the Araya Samajam, representing the Hindu community at Marad, had expressed reservations only against rehabilitating those suspected to be close relatives of the accused. "Samajam leaders have made it clear that they are not opposed to others returning to their homes on their own", he added.
