No readymade solution to Kashmir, says Mufti
Tuesday, August 12 2003 15:03 Hrs (IST)
Chennai: The Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister, Mufti Mohammed Saeed said in Chennai on August
12 that there was no 'ready made solution' to solve Kashmir problem and the first important thing would
be to remove the "walls of hatred and suspicion between the two countries and the mindset of Pakistan".
"If there was one (readymade solution), then leaders like late Jawaharlal Nehru, Lal Bahadur Shastri and
Indira Gandhi would have solved the problem", he said addressing the members of the Southern India
Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Federation of Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry
(Southern region).
Saeed said Prime Minister, A B Vajpayee had now taken the 'peace initiative' and offered the hand of
friendship to Pakistan, despite the bad experience of Kargil war. "Now there is a positive response from
Pakistani Prime Minister also."
First and foremost, there should be more 'confidence building measures' like people to people contacts,
exchange of visits of Parliamentary delegations and media men and visits of leaders of chambers of
commerce and industry, besides resumption of air links, rail links and relaxation of visa.
Saeed said by establishing confidence building measures, the walls of hatred and suspicion could be
removed. "This is the opportunity of the century," he said.
