Tuesday, August 12 2003 18:34 Hrs (IST)

Islamabad: Two Pakistani soldiers were killed after American gun-ship helicopters attacked Pakistani posts on the Pakistan-Afghanistan border on August 11.

Quoting from a statement issued by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) outfit of the Pakistan Armed Forces, 'The News' also confirmed that three other soldiers had gone missing from the Alwar Mandi area of North Waziristan tribal agency.

An ISPR spokesman in Peshawar said Pakistani troops near the Imal Khel post were mistakenly targeted. The dead soldiers have been identified as Muhammad Yamin and Khyal Badshah.

Lance Naik Amjad Hussain Turi of the Frontier Corps was injured, the spokesman said, while adding that Pakistan has lodged a strong protest with the US authorities about the incident.

Reliable sources from Miranshah, the headquarters of North Waziristan Agency informed 'The News', that US troops had reportedly retaliated after they came under a rocket attack in Paktika province. Thinking that the attack had from the Pakistan side, the attack helicopters were directed to target Pakistani posts on the Pak-Afghan border, they added.

Soldiers of Pakistan's Shawal Rifles and 69 Baloch Regiment were attacked. Yamin and Badshah were killed while they were patrolling the border.

Turi, who was seriously injured, has been shifted to the Agency headquarters Hospital at Miranshah. He was stated to be in critical condition when reports last came in.
