'Temple must be anointed in milk, not soaked in blood'
Thursday, August 14 2003 16:36 Hrs (IST)
Nashik: Lashing out at both the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh
(RSS), a prominent head priest of an Ayodhya-based 'Akhada' (sect) has said if a Ram temple is built
there, it should not be "soaked in blood, but anointed in milk."
"Hum ko aisa Mandir nahin chahiye jo khoon se dhoya ho. Aisa Mandir chahiye jo dhoot se dhoya ho
(we dont want a temple soaked in blood, but one annointed with milk)," Gyan Das, the Mahant (head
priest) of Panch Nirvani Akhada, which is based in Ayodhya, said on August 13.
The Mahant's comments came a day before VHP leader Praveen Togadia's proposed visit to
the 'Tapovan' on the banks of Godavari where the sadhus who had come for Nashik Kumbh Mela 2003
are staying.
"The VHP and RSS are most detrimental ('baadhak') to building a temple in Ayodhya, because they want
the issue to be prolonged so that the fire still burns and they can run their shop (aag jalta rahe aur uska
dookan chalta rahe)," Gyan Das said.
Nirvani Akhada and Nirmohi Akhada, both based in Ayodhya have similar views on building the temple,
he said, adding it is possible to build it through peaceful negotiations, and without violence.
The Mahant also lashed out at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government and Prime Minister Atal
Behari Vajpayee, saying they are not "sincere about building the temple."
