'Unmanned moon mission planned for 2008-2009'

New Delhi: In consonance with the mandate of Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) for research in space sciences and based on interest of the scientific community, an unmanned moon mission has been planned for 2008-09, Rajya Sabha was informed on August 14.

The purpose of the mission is to carry out high-resolution remote sensing of the moon in visible, near infrared, low energy x-rays and high energy x-ray regions, Minister of state for Space S B Mookherjee said in a written reply, adding this would enable study the origin and chemical evolution of the moon and its geographical features.

He said European Space Agency (ESA) and Canadian Space Agency (CSA) have shown keen interest to join the mission. However, he said details have not yet been worked out in this regard.
