Pak denies reports of Shiv Shankar Menon's request
Thursday, August 14 2003 15:38 Hrs (IST)
New Delhi: Pakistan on August 14 described as "baseless" a news report that it had not responded to
the request by Indian High Commissioner Shiv Shankar Menon to travel to Wagah border on August 9 to
receive an Indian delegation of Parliamentarians, experts and journalists.
"The High Commission regrets that such a baseless and motivated report has been carried by a
responsible newspaper at a time when a goodwill delegation was visiting Pakistan to participate in the
South Asian Free Media Association (SAFMA) conference on 'Understanding, confidence-building and
conflict-resolution' in Islamabad," the Pakistan High Commission said in a statement.
The Pakistani mission said it would like to state "categorically that at no stage did the Indian mission in
Islamabad make a request to the Pakistan authorities seeking permission for their High Commissioner to
travel to Wagah to receive the Indian delegation".
It hoped that the Indian media would "refrain" from carrying such "tendentious and preposterous" reports
that tended to undermine the spirit of the peace process initiated by the Prime Ministers of the two
countries.
