US introduces resolution on Iraqi Governing Council
Thursday, August 14 2003 10:14 Hrs (IST)
United Nations: The United States has introduced a draft resolution in the Security Council seeking to
formally establish a UN assistance mission in Iraq and welcome the Governing Council, established by
America-led coalition, as "an important step" towards formation of a "true government".
The draft resolution "welcomes the establishment of the broadly representative Governing Council of
Iraq on July 13, 2003, as an important step towards the formation by the people of Iraq of an
internationally recognised, representative government that will exercise the sovereignty of Iraq."
The draft resolution is broadly supported by the four other permanent members of the Security Council –
Russia, China, Britain and France, UN diplomats said. It was given to the 10 non-permanent members
at a Council meeting on August 13.
It is however silent on the issue of broader UN mandate in Iraq sought by France, Germany and other
countries before they could consider sending troops to the country.
