Friday, August 15 2003 10:56 Hrs (IST)

Agartala: In a bloodbath on the eve of Independence Day, at least 28 people were killed and 20 injured in two separate attacks on August 14 night by militants in Tripura.

All Tripura Tiger Force (ATTF) militants, who had given a boycott call of the Independence Day celebrations, opened fire killing 13 people in Totabari and 15 in Baralunga in West Tripura district, police said.

The militants attacked Totabari village at around 20:00 hours (IST) killing six people instantly and wounding 14.

Of the 14, seven succumbed to their injuries on way to hospital, the sources said, adding seven were hospitalised in serious condition.

Nearly one-and-a-half-hours later, another ATTF group mowed down 12 people at Baralunga village and injured as many.

Three of the injured died later, the sources said.

In a separate incident, four Border Security Force (BSF) jawans were shot at and injured by suspected National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT) ultras at Khantlang, bordering Bangladesh.

In another incident, a group of NLFT militants fired at a police patrol at Kaptali in South Tripura district but there were no casualties.
