AIADMK's crucial executive meet on August 18
Saturday, August 16 2003 20:53 Hrs (IST)

Chennai: The executive committee of the ruling All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), meeting in Chennai on August 18, is likely to discuss and take a decision on Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) decision to seek the support of the party on the no-confidence motion being moved by the Congress Party in the Lok Sabha on that day.

The twice-postponed meeting will come handy for the AIADMK leader, Jayalalithaa, to take her party colleagues into confidence on this crucial matter, according to party sources. The AIADMK is not a partner of National Democratic Alliance (NDA) at the Centre now.

The meet, which was originally called for August 4, was postponed to August 11 and again to August 18, due to ''unavoidable circumstances'' as Jayalalithaa put it.

The meeting assumes significance as, of late, the BJP and the AIADMK were in agreement on several national and state-level issues, with former lavishing praise on the ruling party of the state.

Significantly, speaking to newsmen in Thanjavur on August 16, M Karunanidhi, president of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), which is a constituent of the NDA at the centre but not seeing eye-to-eye with BJP in Tamil Nadu, has kept others guessing on how it will vote in the Lok Sabha when he said that his party had not yet taken any decision on the state unit Communists' appeal to vote against the no- confidence motion.
