Pakistan offers talks to resume Samjhauta express
Monday, August 18 2003 20:19 Hrs (IST)
Islamabad: Pakistan on August 18 offered to hold technical-level talks in September for resumption of
train services between the two countries.
"Pakistan has proposed to India, second half of September for holding of technical level talks between
the Railways authorities of the two countries to discuss resumption of Samjhauta Express," a press
release from the Foreign Office said.
"The proposal was formally conveyed to the Indian High Commission in Islamabad today," it said.
The two countries resumed bus services in July after technical level talks.
A round of talks between the civil aviation officials of the two countries was scheduled to take place in
Islamabad from August 26 to discuss resumption of air links. Pakistan wants some guarantees from India
about banning over flights in future, before opening its skies for Indian aircrafts to over fly.
The two countries were expected to resume New Delhi-Lahore and Karachi-Mumbai air links towards the
end of the month if the talks ended on a positive note, sources said.
Direct communication links between the two coun1ries were snapped from January 2002, after the
December 13, 2001 attack on Parliament attributed to Pak-trained terrorists.
