Lucknow: The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) would be submitting its final report on excavation carried out in the acquired land in Ayodhya by August 22, official sources said on August 20.

On the last day of the excavation in Ayodhya on August 7, the ASI had moved the Allahabad High Court seeking permission to visit the site for finalising drawings and checking measurements till August 22.

The court had directed that the report be submitted in a sealed envelope, to be opened on August 25, when the three-member special Bench comprising Justice S R Alam, Justice Bhawar Singh and Justice Khekaran hears the Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid title suits.

Narendra Prasad, officer on special duty (OSD), said the court was specific in its August 8 order that the report should be submitted in a sealed envelope and the contesting parties will not get it.

The ASI had carried out the excavation following court orders. The digging, which started on March 12, was carried out for almost 160 days and ended on August 7. Around 1,360 artefacts were discovered from the site.
