Security situation in Iraq: IMF, WB pull out staff
Thursday, August 21 2003 12:13 Hrs (IST)
United Nations: The key players involved in rebuilding Iraq's devastated economy, the World Bank (WB)
and International Monetary Fund (IMF), have pulled their staff out of Iraq after the bombing of the UN
headquarters in Baghdad where their offices were located.
The Bank has "suspended operations in Iraq, given the security situation", and was moving 14 staff
members to Amman, Jordan, World Bank spokesman Damian Milverton said.
He said one Bank employee remained unaccounted for.
IMF spokesman David Hawley said four staffers who received minor injuries have been taken to Amman
while the fifth member is in Baghdad.
IMF said no decision has been taken to quit Iraq, but it was not sure when its staff would return.
Both World Bank and IMF have a major role in assisting US-led coalition's efforts at rebuilding Iraq.
As many as 20 people died and more than 100 were injured in the most devastating attack ever suffered
by the world body. The United Nations expects the death toll to rise as the rubble is cleared.
