Monday, August 25 2003 21:59 Hrs (IST)

Mumbai: Maharashtra and neighbouring Gujarat were among the states put on high alert on August 25, with security beefed up at airports and vital installations immediately followed the twin blasts in the metropolis.

Police patrolling in communally sensitive places and places of worship across Maharashtra, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal, Delhi and Haryana was intensified after the blasts in the financial capital of the country.

The security apparatus has been strengthened in these states and additional police pickets have been set up. Checking of vehicles was being conducted at various places.

Special vigil was being maintained at airports and railway stations in Mumbai, West Bengal and in the national capital.

In the metropolis, checks of vehicles were conducted at main exit points and on the highways connecting Gujarat and Andhra Pradesh.

In Delhi, which remains high on terrorists' strike list, additional police forces have been deployed in crowded public places and random search of vehicles was conducted.

In Ahmedabad, Chief Minister Narendra Modi asked the police to maintain high vigil in sensitive areas, religious places and cinema halls.
