Mayawati recommends dissolution of UP Assembly
Monday, August 25 2003 14:53 Hrs (IST)
Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati on August 25 sprang a surprise by recommending
dissolution of the state Assembly claiming her Cabinet's backing to it but the coalition partner Bharatiya
Janata Party (BJP) sought to pre-empt her by withdrawing support to the government just minutes
before she met Governor Vishnukant Shastrie.
Climaxing a series of developments, including the Supreme Court rap on the Taj controversy and the
BJP's rejection of her demand for Union Minister Jagmohan's resignation, Mayawati called a meeting of
her Cabinet on August 25 morning, where she is said to have offered to resign.
Mayawati drove to Raj Bhavan and met the Governor. She told reporters later that she has given a letter
containing Cabinet's recommendation for dissolution of the Assembly and holding of polls at the earliest.
The Chief Minister made it clear that she had not resigned and there was no question of it till the House
was dissolved.
