India facing 'unconventional' kind of war: Advani
Tuesday, August 26 2003 17:12 Hrs (IST)
Mumbai: Stating that India is witnessing a new kind of war, Deputy Prime Minister L K Advani on August
26 said the Centre and Maharashtra government will work jointly to fight terrorism.
"The Centre and the intelligence agencies will provide all possible assistance to Maharashtra
government (following the twin blasts in Mumbai)," Advani told reporters after inspecting the blast site in
Zaveri bazaar, the hub of gold and diamond trade, where one of the two car bombs exploded.
"We are witnessing a new kind of war, which exposes the common man, women and children to acts of
terror," he said.
This had first began in Jammu and Kashmir and Punjab, he said, adding this war was different from the
conventional one where only soldiers die.
On the Sena-BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) demand to dismiss the state government, he said, "I have
come here to work with the state to fight terrorist activities.
"I had talks with Chief Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde, Home Minister Chhagan Bhujbal and senior officials
about the blasts and am confident that they (state) would find out the culprits involved," Advani added.
Comparing the August 25 blasts to those which had shaken Mumbai in 1993 when explosives were
placed in scooters, he said, "I cannot talk at this moment except to say that the blast here may have also
been carried out by keeping explosives in suitcases and placing them in vehicles."
