Now a car that parks itself!
Tuesday, August 26 2003 17:15 Hrs (IST)

Washington: Heralding a revolution in the field of technological advance, car giant Toyota plans to launch a car next month in Japan that parallel parks itself in any spot, without being aided by the driver.

According to Wired News, a report in Australian newspaper 'The Age' said the Japanese carmaker has improvised its hybrid Prius model with special gear to make parallel parking a possibility.

Toby Hagan, an editor with 'The Age', who test drove the vehicle along with other scribes, observed that the car attempts a perfect reverse park without the driver touching the wheel, by making use of a rear- mounted camera and a computer program. "This system assures you don't hit other cars," Hagan was quoted as saying.

Come September, and the car will hit the markets and initially, it will be touted as a high-end feature for the $ 20,000 car. The Prius uses an electric motor to assist a gasoline engine to conserve fuel.

"We have automatic cruise control. Parking and collision-avoidance-type functions are coming along as well," Rickett said.

Toyota's Prius may become the first car to exhibit a built-in computer, which electronically measures a parking spot and marks a turn-in point with a virtual flagpole, steering the car automatically into the rear end space first. The car also monitored white lines, gutters and nearby objects, avoiding scratches and performing a "perfect" park every time.

However, a major discouragement for the Toyota model could be its huge price tag, which could deter people from going for it.
