I can't visit Pak unless proxy war ends: Fernandes
Tuesday, August 26 2003 18:21 Hrs (IST)

New Delhi: Pakistan would have to end its proxy war against India first before a visit to that country could be considered, Union Defence Minister George Fernandes said on August 26.

"We are in a state of conflict. There is a proxy war on against India. And with that kind of situation, there is no way a Defence Minister can go to Pakistan, not till there is an end to proxy war or cross-border terrorism," Fernandes was quoted as saying by a news agency.

"If this (terrorism) is not going to stop, then that is going to create far more problems, not just to the subcontinent, but to the whole world," he added.

He said people in both countries desired peace and there was a feeling that "we need to find a way out of this predicament, which I believe we have found out".
