Private transport operators' strike in WB called off
Tuesday, August 26 2003 20:50 Hrs (IST)

Kolkata: The three-day strike by private transport operators in West Bengal, which began on August 26 morning was called off following assurance by Transport Minister Subhas Chakraborty to keep in abeyance the government's decision to realise additional taxes and stiff fines by the police.

The decision to call off the strike by 24 private transport operators was taken after a meeting with the minister.

Bengal Bus Syndicate president Swarnakamal Saha told reporters that following the minister's assurance, the transport operators' associations decided to withdraw the stir for the time being.

The strike evoked mixed response, with some private buses and mini buses on the roads in the metropolis and elsewhere in the districts.
