UP crisis: 'Governor must ask SP to form govt'
Tuesday, August 26 2003 18:43 Hrs (IST)
New Delhi: Asserting that the demand for dissolution of the Uttar Pradesh Assembly should not be
accepted, CPM (Communist Party of India-Marxist) on August 26 said it was incumbent on the Uttar
Pradesh Governor to call Samajwadi Party to form government in the wake of the "collapse" of the
Mayawati government.
"Democratic norms demand that the leader of the single largest party in the Assembly, the Samajwadi
Party, be asked to form the government," the party Polit Bureau said in a statement in New Delhi.
The party said it was now incumbent upon the Governor to explore the possibility of the formation of an
alternative government and the new government should be asked to prove its majority in the Assembly.
"The demand for dissolution of the Assembly or the imposition of President's rule cannot be accepted," it
said.
