Tuesday, August 26 2003 12:22 Hrs (IST)
Mumbai: Police are on the lookout for two persons, including a woman, who had hired the taxi that blew
off in an explosion near the Gateway of India in Mumbai on August 25.
Interrogation of taxi driver Shivnarayan Vasudev Pandey has revealed that the couple had hired his cab
at sub-urban Andheri and kept their bag in the dicky, police said on August 26.
The man got down at Dhobi Talao while the woman proceeded to Gateway of India where she
discontinued the journey for lunch, police said.
The taxi driver too went for lunch and on return saw his vehicle damaged in the blast. He then
volunteered to give information to police.
Meanwhile, police have picked up three persons from sub-urban areas for questioning in this case.
Police said they had gathered intelligence reports about women members of Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT)
being used as carriers in the blast operations. There are three such groups operating in Mumbai since
last few months, police said.
The women members of LeT are not suicide bombers but they provide support to the terrorists and go
underground after the explosions, police said.
Both the taxis, in which the bombs were planted, were from the suburban areas, police added.
In all 50 persons were killed and 139 others injured in two car-bomb explosions at Gateway of India and
Dhanji Street in South Mumbai.
