Lucknow: Samajwadi Party (SP) leader Mulayam Singh Yadav was on August 28 invited by Uttar
Pradesh Governor Vishnu Kant Shastri to form government in the state, ending three-day political crisis
triggered by collapse of Mayawati-led Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP)-Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)
coalition.
A day after 63-year old Yadav submitted a letter to Shastri claiming support of 210 MLAs of various
parties and Independents in the 403-member house, Governor's Principal Secretary Shambhunath
handed over a formal invitation to him for forming the government.
Samajwadi Party, which is the single largest party in the House, also claimed to have the support of 13
MLAs of Mayawati's BSP.
Yadav, who will become Chief Minister for the third time, will take oath on August 29, his private
secretary Jagjivan Prasad said.
The Samajwadi Party that has 142 members in the House with an effective strength of 402, has support
of Congress (16), Rashtriya Lok Dal (14), Rashtriya Krantikari Party (4), Communist Party of India-
Marxist (2) and others 19 besides 13 BSP MLAs.
Yadav had told the Governor, who asked him to furnish a list of supporting MLAs, that he would prove
his majority on the floor of the House.
Leader of all major political parties except BJP and BSP had accompanied Yadav for the meeting with
the Governor on August 27.
Congress leader Pramod Tiwari, RLD's Kokab Hamid and Rashtriya RKP leader Kalyan Singh were
among those who accompanied him.
They also separately handed over to the Governor letters extending their support to Yadav.
