Friday, August 29 2003 15:28 Hrs (IST)

Silchar (Assam): Two Inter-Service Intelligence (ISI) linkmen suspected to be working agents of the Pak intelligence agency were arrested and fake Indian currency notes totalling Rs 3.5 lakh recovered from them at a village in Assam's Cachar district, police said on August 29.

ISI, the police said, was distributing the fake currency notes to destabilise the economy of the North Eastern region.

The two were arrested on August 28 during a raid by the police, following a tip off at village Algapur part- II.

The police raided the house of ISI linkman Afjur Rahman Choudhury on a tip off that one Ramlung Ruiba had come there with the fake notes. The police caught Ruiba red handed when he was handing over counterfeit Rs 500 notes bundled in seven packets.

Ruiba is a resident of Ukrul Bazar area of Manipur and the two were involved in such counterfeit currency trade for a long time using Choudhury's house as a conduit point, the police said.

The two confessed before police that they had purchased the counterfeit notes for Rs 2.40 lakh, the police added.
