Curfew relaxed in Daman, Section 144 to continue
Saturday, August 30 2003 12:18 Hrs (IST)

Daman: Curfew was relaxed in most parts in Damam after a flag march by police on August 30 morning even as a total bandh is being observed to protest against the government apathy in view of the police firing and subsequent violence that killed a person and injured 11 others on August 29.

"One person was killed and 11 injured in yesterday's (August 29) violence," Collector Gyanendra Shrivastav said.

"After a flag march by the police force this morning (August 30), curfew was relaxed in most parts except in three sensitive areas. However, section 144 continues to be in force in entire Daman," Shrivastav said.

Police had opened fired on a mob which hurled stones at the car of Union Minister Harin Pathak and curfew was imposed in this port city on August 29 as angry residents attacked a police station and torched and stoned vehicles blaming the authorities for collapse of the bridge on Damanganga river which killed 27 people, mostly school children.

"Of the 11 injured, six had bullet injuries. One of them is serious and has been shifted to Surat while five are admitted at Hariya Hospital at Vapi," hospital sources said.

Other five, including three policemen, were injured in lathi charge and stone pelting by the mob. They are undergoing treatment at Marwad Hospital in Daman, the sources added.

Meanwhile, chief of Police V R Jethwa said Gujarat Special Reserve Police Force (SRPF) has been called from Vadodara and Surat to control the situation. Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and Rapid Action Force (RAF) has also been called in, he said.

One car and one shop in Nani Daman and a government office and a private office were set on fire on August 29 night by the irate mob, police said. However, the situation is under control on August 30, police added.
