Mayawati's outbursts are out of frustration: Naidu
Saturday, August 30 2003 16:56 Hrs (IST)
Chennai: The recent outbursts by former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati against Bharatiya
Janata Party (BJP) are "out of frustration and disappointment", BJP president Venkaiah Naidu said on
August 30.
She took certain decisions like slapping of Prevention of Terrorism Act (POTA) against independent
Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) Raghuraj Pratap Singh alias Raja Bhaiya without even consulting
the partner, BJP. It was a unilateral decision on Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) part to recommend
dissolution of the Assembly, he said.
"BSP was now suffering and facing the consequences on account of the wrong decisions taken by it,"
Naidu told reporters en route to Coimbatore.
Naidu said Mayawati enjoyed power all these days and she was now behaving "in such fashion'. BJP
joined the coalition and it had done its best by extending co-operation all these days in Uttar Pradesh.
On withdrawal of POTA cases by the new regime in Uttar Pradesh, he said if any government wanted to
revoke POTA, it had to obtain the permission of the court. "That has not been done so far in Uttar
Pradesh." BJP always held the view that it was not "advisable" to use POTA against political leaders.
If any state government desired to withdraw POTA, it should take permission of the court. POTA was
necessary in the overall interest of the country, he said.
"We have seen what happened in Mumbai recently. It strengthens the need to have a stringent
legislation like POTA. Extraordinary laws are required to meet extraordinary situations," the BJP
president felt.
