Sunday, August 31 2003 20:07 Hrs (IST)
New Delhi: With the killing of two militants of Pakistan-backed Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) and arrest of
five others, including two from Uttar Pradesh on August 31, Delhi Police claimed to have virtually
destroyed a module of the outfit planning "some spectacular strike" in the capital.
Police has also launched a hunt to nab one Rashid, a close associate of JeM chief commander in India
Ghazi Baba, who was killed in Srinagar on August 30, besides the owner of the truck in which a large
quantity of ammunition, including 10 grenades and one grenade launcher, was brought from
Kashmir.
Rashid is an intermediary between Ghazi Baba and Noor Mohammad, one of the three persons arrested
with explosive laden truck late on August 30 night, and had directed the terrorists to set up a base in
Sikandrabad in Uttar Pradesh's Bulandshahr district for a strike in Delhi, joint commissioner of police
(special cell) Neeraj Kumar told a crowded press conference.
The five arrested militants of JeM have been booked under Prevention of Terrorism Act (POTA),
Explosives Act and Indian Penal Code (IPC), he said.
As a follow-up of August 30's gunning down of two JeM terrorists and arrest of three others, Delhi police
on August 31 conducted an early morning raid in Sikandrabad and arrested two other Pakistan-trained
members of the outfit, he said.
A large quantity of explosives, including three remote-controlled bombs and 23 electronic detonators
besides cash of Rs 85,000 were recovered from their possession, he said.
