Musharraf planning re-imposition of martial law: MMA
Monday, September 1 2003 15:35 Hrs (IST)
Karachi: Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf may be planning to impose martial law in the country
again, Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal (MMA) leader Liaquat Baloch claimed over the weekend.
Musharraf will introduce fundamental changes to the system, the MMA's deputy Parliamentary leader
added. Baloch indicated that the MMA leadership would meet in Islamabad on September 1 to decide on
its future strategy, including dialogue.
He was speaking to reporters after attending the 63rd foundation-day ceremonies of the Jamaat-e-Islami
(JeI).
"We will decide whether negotiations with the government should be continued or not," 'The Daily News'
quoted Baloch as saying. Stating that not much had been achieved from talks with the government,
Baloch said, "The MMA has completed the process of negotiations and discussions."
The MMA leadership would also finalise a strategy of a public contact campaign against General
Musharraf in Islamabad. "The Army will not be able to control the people's hatred for General Musharraf
once the movement starts in the country," Baloch said.
Musharraf, who assumed power on October 12, 1999, initially imposed martial law before taking over as
President in 2002.
