Tuesday, September 2 2003 22:59 Hrs (IST)

New Delhi: The "touchstone" of complete normalcy in Jammu and Kashmir could only be the return of Kashmiri migrants to the valley, Deputy Prime Minister L K Advani told a delegation of Panun Kashmir on September 2.

In their 20-minute long meeting, the delegation of Panun Kashmir comprising its convenor Agnishekar and leaders K L Chowdhury and Yuvraj Raina briefed Advani about the recommendations made at the two-day seminar organised by Observer ResearchFoundation.

"The Deputy Prime Minister told us that he was of the view that touchstone for peace in Kashmir valley would be only the return of Kashmiri pundits to the valley," Chowdhury said.

The Deputy Prime Minister told "us that he did not consider the present lull in the violence as return of normalcy," he added.

He also said that the delegation demanded enhancement of cash relief from Rs 3000 to Rs 6000 compensation to people who had lost their land and property, recruitment in state government services and education for children besides better living conditions.

The delegation also claimed that Minister of State for Home I D Swami had assured Kashmiri pundits during the two-day discussion that the tenements of migrants would be made of concrete.

Among others present at the seminar were National Conference president Omar Abdullah, People's Democratic Party (PDP) leader Mehbooba Mufti and separatist leaders Sajjad Lone, Shabir Shah and Babar Badar.
