Chamarajnagar: Congress president Sonia Gandhi on September 2 advised leaders of her party run
states not to overstate but promise what the government could deliver and called upon the political class
to devise programmes aimed at developing the future generation.
"Promise what you can deliver to the people. And take decisions which reach and help the poorest of
the people like women, adivasis, scheduled castes and scheduled tribes", she told Congress
governments in states.
Launching "Akshara Dasoha", a midday meal scheme of JSS Math and Karnataka government at
Yellandur in backward Charamrajnagar district, she also said "programmes should be started by the
government, politicians and us, which are aimed at youngsters and the future generation".
"The programmes should not be short-sighted but aimed at the long term interest of the people," Gandhi
said.
Stating that there were many educated youth in the country who had no "ambition" and were getting
wayward and taking to bad ways, she said it was up to the "society, and government to ensure that the
youth were put on the right path."
Lauding the service of the JSS math of the dominant Lingayat community, Gandhi said the society and
the political class should emulate the service done by the math to the "daridra narayana" or
downtrodden in providing education, food and housing to the people.
