Mumbai blasts must not be linked to Guj riots: BJP
Wednesday, September 3 2003 20:23 Hrs (IST)
New Delhi: The Bharatiya Janata Part (BJP) on September 3 said it was not
proper to view the twin blasts in Mumbai as a fall-out of the communal violence in Gujarat.
"It is not right just because some incidents had occurred in Gujarat, the others were a fallout of that,"
BJP spokesman Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi told reporters.
"The biggest problem is that a handful of terrorist organisations are influencing the Muslim community
and bringing it a bad name," he said.
Naqvi said a suspicion has grown worldwide since the September 11, 2001, attacks on the US that
majority of Muslims are linked to terrorist outfits and asked Muslims to launch a "social campaign" to
counter the propaganda.
"It is very necessary that the Muslim community carries out a social campaign to counter the
propaganda that majority of them are linked to terrorist outfits. This impression of maligning an entire
community just because of actions by a small section should be firmly countered by them," he said.
He said this was imperative since the "Muslim community was under suspicion and doubt and members
of the community are looked on with suspicion. Even some Islamic countries are viewing with suspicion
those Muslims who are coming from India, Pakistan and Indonesia."
Naqvi said just because organisations like al-Qaida and Jaish-i-Mohammed were encouraging Muslims
to undertake Jihad, the entire community is being given a "bad name" and this should be taken up as a
challenge and countered.
"This kind of campaign by these organisations as also by Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) in
this country should be taken up as a challenge by Muslims and countered," he added.
