Major haul of AK-47 cartridges from JK-bound truck
Wednesday, September 3 2003 19:04 Hrs (IST)

Kolkata: An abandoned truck laden with over 25,000 7.62 bore cartridges used in AK47 rifles bound for Jammu and Kashmir was on September 3 seized by the police in the metropolis in the biggest-ever haul of ammunition in recent times, amidst speculations that the consignment was destined for militants.

The truck bearing a Meghalaya number plate was found parked at Dhabitola under West Port police station after a tip off that an explosives laden vehicle would pass through the metropolis, Kolkata Police Commissioner Sujoy Chakraborty told reporters in Kolkata.

There was no trace of the occupants, he said.

He said that the Army as well as other authorities have been contacted while it was being ascertained for whom the consignment was destined.
