'No change in India's stand on sending troops to Iraq'

New Delhi: India on September 2 made it clear that there was no change in its position of considering
sending troops to Iraq if there was an "explicit" UN mandate.
"Our position on this matter is very clear. The position is as decided by the Cabinet Committee on
Security on July 14. I am not aware of any change," External Affairs Ministry spokesman told reporters.
"If there is an explicit UN mandate, the matter will be considered," he said.
The spokesman was asked whether Washington's proposal for a UN mandated force under American
command was acceptable to India.
"I am not getting into speculative issues," he said.
The fate of the American proposal has remained uncertain despite intense diplomatic efforts with
France, Russia and Germany seeking more voice in the decision-making and political process.
The spokesman said India continues to be committed to the reconstruction process in Iraq and for
extending humanitarian assistance to the friendly people of that country.
