Curfew in Godhra following communal clashes
Friday, September 5 2003 18:25 Hrs (IST)

Ahmedabad: Curfew was imposed in the sensitive Godhra town following communal clashes during Ganesh festival procession, official sources said on September 5.

Some injuries have been reported but officials could not give the exact count.

The incident started when a procession for Ganpati immersion was passing through the minority-dominated locality of Polan Bazar late September 5 afternoon and "heavy stone-throwing by locals of the area caused the situation to flare up', a senior police official said.

Police had to resort to lathicharge and lob teargas shells to control the situation and curfew was imposed.
