21 farmers committed suicide in Mandya in August
Saturday, September 6 2003 19:24 Hrs (IST)

Mandya: A total of 21 debt-ridden farmers have committed suicides in the district in the past one month, a senior official said on September 6.

In eight suicide cases, the state government has given over Rs 1 lakh compensation, while the other cases will be investigated, Deputy Commissioner Rajkumar told reporters.

"If the cause is genuine then only compensation will be given," he said.

The main reasons for suicide have been severe drought, crop loss and debt burden, he said.

The Deputy Commissioner urged the farmers not to resort to the extreme step and face the situation bravely.

He further assured the farmers of all necessary support by the government.
