Cabinet to be expanded, Mamta may get berth

New Delhi: The Union Cabinet will be expanded on September 8, Prime Minister's Office (PMO) sources said.

Trinamool Congress leader Mamta Banerjee is expected to get a Cabinet berth, the sources said.

A member of Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK), an ally of National Democratic Alliance (NDA), may also join the Union Council of Ministers, the sources said. MDMK is led by Vaiko who is currently in jail in Tamil Nadu facing charges under Prevention of Terrorism Act (POTA).

Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee had on September 6 held consultations with his deputy L K Advani, Finance Minister Jaswant Singh and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president M Venkaiah Naidu on Cabinet expansion.
