Curfew relaxed in Godhra; 200 rioters identified
Sunday, September 7 2003 16:19 Hrs (IST)

Godhra: Curfew was on September 7 relaxed for four hours in communally sensitive Godhra town of Panchmahals district that witnessed communal clashes last week leaving 15 persons injured, official sources said in Godhra.

"Curfew has been relaxed from 2 pm to 6 pm for everyone but security arrangements remain as they are," special Inspector General of Police (Vadodara range) Rakesh Asthana said.

No arrest has been made so far but police have identified about 100 rioters of each community with the help of a video footage of the incident, he said.

Police have registered four cases in connection with the communal violence, in which four shops were torched and vehicles were also damaged.

Curfew was imposed after violence broke out between two communities on September 5 following stoning of a Ganesh festival procession carrying idols for immersion, in minority-dominated Polan Bazaar area, injuring 15 persons, including four policemen.

Officials had to fire four rounds in the air and lob several teargas shells and resort to lathi-charge before imposing curfew in the trouble hit areas.
