Chennai: Union Minister Murasoli Maran was flown back to Chennai on September 7 after undergoing
treatment for heart problems in the US for nearly 10 months and was admitted to the Apollo Hospital.
Maran, who went through specialised treatment in the Methodist Hospital in Houston, was taken to Apollo
Hospital straight from the airport after a special aircraft carrying him landed in Chennai in the wee
hours.
His family decided to bring him back from US since there was neither any progress nor deterioration in
his health condition, family sources said.
The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) leader's son Kalanidhi Maran, his daughter-in-law and wife,
besides Union Ministers T R Baalu and H Raja were present at the airport to receive him.
Maran had undergone a valve replacement surgery at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in
(AIIMS) New Delhi in July last year.
Later, he developed post-operative complications and chest pain and was shifted to Chennai on
September 23 for treatment at Apollo Hospital.
He underwent a high-risk emergency mitral valve replacement surgery on September 25 but there was
not much improvement in his condition. He was then taken to the US on November 14 for specialised
treatment.
