Bush asks for troops, money to fight terror
Monday, September 8 2003 12:57 Hrs (IST)
Washington: Seeking a broader UN role in Iraq, US President George W Bush has appealed to
opponents of war to contribute troops and money for security and reconstruction and not "let past
differences interfere with present duties" even as he announced that he would seek $ 87 billion to fight
terrorism in Baghdad and Afghanistan and "engage the enemy where he lives".
In an 18-minute address to the nation tonight (Sept 8) from the White House's Cabinet room, Bush said
Iraq is now the central front against terrorism and other nations must contribute troops and money to
oppose the enemies of freedom.
"We will do what is necessary, we will spend what is necessary, to achieve this essential victory in the
war on terror, to promote freedom and to make our own nation more secure," he said.
Bush announced that he would soon submit to Congress a request for $ 87 billion. The request, he said,
will cover ongoing military and intelligence operations in Iraq, Afghanistan and elsewhere, which he
expected would cost $ 66 billion over the next year.
